"O Skald, sing now an olden song,
Such as our fathers heard who led great lives;
And, as the bravest on a shield is borne
Along the waving host that shouts him king,
So rode their thrones upon the thronging seas!"

This year's Epic Weekend will be the weekend of the 27th March and will focus on Norse Myths.

Unlike in previous years there is no one version to go with, so for tale headings we're using Kevin Crossley Holland's "Norse Myths" (KCH), supplemented by Barbara Leonie Picard's "Tales of the Norse Gods" (BLP). We are aiming for between eight and ten hours of telling split across the tellers and of course listeners are more than welcome.

For those who've not been before, the format is arrival on the Friday afternoon for dinner and the first part of the telling, telling through Saturday, and the first part of Sunday, aiming to finish by about 4pm on the Sunday. Many people stay over the Sunday night and leave on the Monday morning.

The location will depend upon the number of bookings before the middle of October, but will either be close to the welsh border as in the two previous years, or possibly in the peak district. As this event isn't run at a profit this should allow me to gauge interest and pick a venue which keeps us within budget. Accommodation is normally in shared rooms with bunks (we've used an activity centre and a youth hostel in the past).

The cost will be £100 per person, consisting of a £50 deposit on booking and the remainder to be paid by Christmas.

The tales we are telling are the following - numbers in square brackets are rough timings based upon page count and the total amount of time we are telling for, so please take them with a large pinch of salt.

  1. The Creation [11]
  2. The War of the Aesir and Vanir [6]
  3. The Building of Asgard's Wall [17]
  4. Lord of the Gallows [8]
  5. The Song of Rig [22]
  6. The Mead of Poetry [19]
  7. Loki's Children and the Binding of Fenrir [14]
  8. The Theft of Idun's Apples [17]
  9. The Marriage of Njord and Skadi [11]
  10. The Treasures of the Gods [17]
  11. Skirnir's Journey [14]
  12. The Lay of Grimnir [17]
  13. The Necklace of the Brisings [14]
  14. The Lay of Thrym [14]
  15. The Lay of Vathfrudnir [14]
  16. Thor's Journey to Utgard [42]
  17. The Lay of Hymir [14]
  18. Hyndla's Poem [11]
  19. Thor's Duel with Hrungnir [22]
  20. How Loki Outwitted a Giant (see BLP) [17]
  21. Odin and Billing's Daughter [6]
  22. Gylfi and Gefion [6]
  23. The Lay of Harbard [14]
  24. The Ballad of Svipdag [17]
  25. Thor and Geirrod [17]
  26. The Lay of Loddfafnir [8]
  27. Otter's Ransom [18]
  28. The Lay of Alvis [11]
  29. Balder's Dreams [8]
  30. The Death of Baldur [33]
  31. Loki's Flyting [19]
  32. The Binding of Loki [11]
  33. Ragnarok [11]

I would like tellers to sign up for at least half an hour of telling. They don't have to be consecutive tales, and don't have to be on the list as long as the tale involves the Norse gods. As mentioned above these are guide times so if you find they come out shorter or longer, just let me know and I'll adjust the schedule accordingly.

To book, please email me at goodale@gmail.com, subject line "Epic Weekend Booking - YOUR NAME" (please replace "YOUR NAME" with your name). In the email I need:

  • Names of everyone you are booking for, saying which are tellers and which are listeners.
  • A list of tales for each teller, or I can pick the tales out of a hat for you.
  • Any dietary requirements.
  • Any accessibility issue.

I will then send you details of how to pay your deposit.

If you live within striking distance of North East Wales, or even if you don't, and fancy taking part in a storytelling marathon now is your chance. As part of the 2014 Fun Palaces weekend the Gladstone Library is putting on a Storytelling Marathon! Eight hours of continual storytelling. You can tell anything, a traditional tale, a family story, a humorous anecdote, ... The only stipulation is that it must be told rather than read, and must be a story (so no poems or songs); you will have ten minutes to tell anything. You can include musical accompaniment, or do it as a group.

If you fancy having a go, pick and reserve your ten minute slot at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fun-palace-storytelling-marathon-registration-11561676285 It's free!

It will be suitable for all ages and there will be lots of other stuff happening in the Gladstone Library as part of the event, with refreshments on sale.

I know it's not as long a marathon as the 46 hour Maratón de Cuentos de Guadalajara, but we have to start somewhere.

I won't be officially telling at this fantastic weekend at Halsway manor, but will be calling some dances on the Saturday evening, and telling in storyrounds around the fire too.

For more information look at the Halsway Manor website, but I've copied in the major information below.

Hosted by Taffy Thomas, the first Storyteller Laureate.

THE WEEKEND
Taffy Thomas returns to host the 4th 'Tales in Trust' weekend at Halsway Manor.
Leading storytellers, authors, and festival directors brign their combined expertise to present shows, workshops and discussions about the link between the narrative of history and the magic of folktale.
Our tutors believe their stories and skills were entrusted to them. All attending the weekend will gain access to these tales and skills in a series of lively performances and engaging practical workshops - and of course there will be msuic and dancing in a Saturday evening 'Merry Neet' plus our Storytellers Question Time.

PROFICIENCY LEVEL
The weekend is suitable for experienced storytellers, beginners, those who iwsh to use storytelling in their work, or those who just like to listen to a rattling good tale in pleasant company. As Taffy puts it, "if speaking was more improtant than listening, we'd have two tongues and one ear."

TUTORS
Taffy Thomas MBE founded and directed  legendary folk theatre company 'Magic Lantern' illustrating traditional stories and songs with shadow puppets and circus skills and founded and directed the community arts company 'Charivari' with their popular touring unit 'the Fabulous Salami Brothers', which he fronted and performed in. After a major stroke at the age of 36 Taffy turned back to story telling as self-imposed speech therapy, which turned into a new career leading to the award of an MBE for services to storytelling and charity, and appointment as the first Storyteller Laureate.
Other tutors include Dave Tonge (the Norwich Yarnsmith), Dr. Simon Heywood (University of Derby), storyteller Shonaleigh, Helen Watts (author of children's historical novels), Andy Burton and Gill Bond (creators of the Moonraking Festival, which features storytelling as an integral part of its programme).

ENJOY THE AREA, BRING A FRIEND, SHARE A ROOM & SAVE MONEY
You can book on a course at Halsway and bring a friend who can explore the area while using Halsway as a base for meals and accommodation. I will be one of 24 tellers telling the Iliad in Gloucestershire in April.
Last year some of us gathered in Wales to tell the Odyssey.  It was a fantastic weekend, and we decided we'd try to do a different epic each year.  This year we are doing the Iliad, and are sure it will be just as fun as last year.
The event is open for anyone to tell, and anyone to listen.  So if you are interested in finding out more about the Iliad and the world of the Greek Myths, this is your chance.  Either come and listen, or, better yet, come and tell; last year we had a combination of first-timers, newcomers, semi-professionals, and professional tellers, so whatever your level of telling experience, you are welcome.

Join twenty four storytellers as we gather over a weekend in the Wales to tell the Odyssey.
Each teller has taken a different chapter and we will spend the weekend weaving them together to tell the Odyssey in its entirety.  I have been given chapter 22 to do, which is a particularly bloody chapter, with a host of characters, most of whom die; a bit like Hamlet really.
Of course what is storytelling without story listeners?  This is an event unlikely to be repeated, and not to be missed.
